Reason 1: Stagnation of growth

There has been so much cushioning of spaces that people are turning into perpetual “participation award winners.” I blame the 1990s and 2000s parents for believing everyone deserves a trophy and that competition and excellence cause harm to self-esteem.

That’s just bull shit.

Look. I get it. We don’t want to create environments where someone feels demeaned or less-than because they lost a game or because they have not improved as fast as someone else with a particular skill…

But it’s not the pursuit of excellence that’s the problem. It’s how we socialize kids to respond when they don’t achieve what they set out to.

It’s okay to lose. It’s okay that someone else is better than you at something. We are individuals and we will never be “equally good” at all things with all other people.

Get over it.
