1000 years ago your ancestors had to grow crops like this just to have food to eat. If you’ve never worked on a farm, you might not think about how difficult this process is.

You have to break up the top soil with a shovel or whatever your region had available. Then walk around bending over to plant and cover seeds. Next, you had to hope and pray for just the right amount of rain, remove weeds, chase away animals that want to eat the plants.

Then 6 to 8 months later, you had to cut the grain by hand with a saw or blade. Gather and tie the bushels and carry them one at a time to store close to home.

You then had to chase away animals and prevent bugs from eating the food.
